Zeekracht is a not-for-profit cooperative, initiated by the Dutch Society for Nature and Environment (Stichting Natuur en Milieu). The word 'Zeekracht' is a combination of the words 'zee' (sea) and 'kracht' (force, power) to demonstrate our aim to provide all Dutch households with sustainable electricity from the North sea in 2020. Zeekracht intends to build its own wind turbines to supply its members with clean, sustainable energy. Furthermore, Zeekracht will put pressure on the Dutch government for the development of more wind power on the North sea. More off-shore wind power can significantly reduce CO2-emissions and our dependence on foreign energy sources.
All Dutch citizens can be members of Zeekracht and in due time will be able to use their self generated North sea electricity. Partners In Zeekracht are: energy company Eneco, ASN Bank and Doen Foundation (Stichting Doen). Zeekracht hopes to make Holland one of the leading countries when it comes to innovative and sustainable energy production. The world market for offshore wind power is developing rapidly. New technologies and innovations may be valuable exports. The Netherlands has ample opportunities in this market with a powerful water and energy sector and world famous institutes in these fields. What is lacking so far, is a strong home market. Authorization procedures for new wind farms take years in the Netherlands and there is insufficient government funding available for offshore wind power. Zeekracht wants to change this. Zeekracht seeks to develop the home market for wind power through its own projects and political lobby.
The world-famous architect Rem Koolhaas has prepared a masterplan for the development of wind power on the North Sea. Wind power from the North Sea can provide as much energy as the oil from the Persian Gulf now. The master plan pinpoints areas for an international ring of wind parks in connection with shipping areas as well as nature areas and recreational regions. You can support Zeekracht: become a member or make a donation. Membership is only € 10 per year. More members means a stronger voice for Zeekracht. And that is important to ensure that sustainable energy from the North sea gets a fair chance! And Zeekracht members will be the first to co-own their own windmill on the North sea and produce sustainable energy for their personal use.
